# Deep vs. regular dental cleaning: differences

Not all cleanings are the same. The **regular cleaning** (prophylaxis) and the **deep cleaning** (scaling and root planing) address different situations.

## Regular cleaning (prophylaxis)

It's the routine preventive cleaning: it removes **plaque and tartar** above the gum and polishes the teeth. It's indicated when the gums are healthy and is done periodically.

## Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing)

It's indicated when there's already **gum disease** (periodontitis) and tartar has accumulated below the gum, on the root. It cleans those pockets and smooths the root so the gum can reattach. It usually requires anesthesia and sometimes several sessions by area.
