Not all cleanings are the same. The regular cleaning (prophylaxis) and the deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) address different situations.

Regular cleaning (prophylaxis)

It's the routine preventive cleaning: it removes plaque and tartar above the gum and polishes the teeth. It's indicated when the gums are healthy and is done periodically.

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing)

It's indicated when there's already gum disease (periodontitis) and tartar has accumulated below the gum, on the root. It cleans those pockets and smooths the root so the gum can reattach. It usually requires anesthesia and sometimes several sessions by area.

How do I know which I need?

With a periodontal exam: the dentist measures the state of your gums and the level of tartar. Many people only need prophylaxis; those with inflamed or bleeding gums may need the deep one.

A timely deep cleaning can prevent tooth loss from periodontal disease.

Frequently asked questions

Does deep cleaning hurt?

It's done with local anesthesia, so it's comfortable. There may be mild sensitivity afterward, well managed.

Is it normal to need several sessions?

Yes, deep cleaning is usually divided by quadrants or areas depending on the extent.

Can I request a deep one directly?

It's indicated based on diagnosis. If your gums are healthy, routine prophylaxis is enough.
